Branding Project for Gerry’s Pompeii:

The name Gerry’s Pompeii is based on a quote from the artist during the only known recorded conversation between him and a neighbor in 2014. The quote follows ”They’ll be astonished by what they’ll find in my garden in years to come, it’ll be like Pompeii or something, Gerry’s Pompeii.” It is a site-specific artwork created by an ‘outsider artist’ in his own home in Notting Hill. Gerry’s artwork can be seen from the canal running alongside Trellick Tower, but there is even more artwork throughout Gerry’s home.

After Gerry’s death in 2019, a group of volunteers started campaigning to save Gerry’s Pompeii: to keep the artwork within his home. For this they require a huge amount of fundraising conserve the artworks, acquire the property from the council, secure the property and make it fit to visit. The contents of this house are an artwork in their own right, which is an integral part of the community, and should remain where it was created.

Solver Design created branding for Gerry’s Pompeii as a charity and applied this branding to campaign posters, social media and communications such as fundraising presentations and letters. Gerry labelled all of his artworks with his unique handwriting so I created a logo and typeface using samples of Gerry’s handwriting. Gerry ‘marked’ all of his artworks with green paint or felt, and painted all of his sulptures with the same maroon red, so these colours informed the creation of the colour palette. Sample sections of the brand guidelines are included here.
